Joel Getzendanner is a Deputy Assistant Commissioner in the Employment Security Department’s (ESD) Workforce Initiatives unit. He works on special projects that involve multiple divisions or multiple agencies. Currently, Joel leads the team analyzing results of Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) contracts to local workforce development boards, with an emphasis on identifying excellent performance. He also oversees the development of software related to posting registered apprenticeship offerings on ESD’s online labor exchange, WorkSourceWA.com.
Prior to joining ESD, Joel was vice president of a major private foundation in the Midwest, focusing on workforce development policy and K-12 education reform. He also managed the endowment of a New York based national foundation, developing strategies for social-purpose investing. Most recently, Joel provided a broad range of advisory services. Projects included two software start-ups on privacy-supporting architectures, a national union for “gig economy” workers, and a San Diego-based family foundation focused on cross-cultural communication. He earned a BA at Dartmouth College and an MBA at the University of Chicago.
